It’s time for an update on creators earning tokens, and an announcement about a new feature to support that - keys! Keys give creators the ability to sell access to things in their rooms for tokens. It’s one of many ways we’re trying to reward creators for their work more.
Keys are in beta, so for now a group of selected creators can sell access to items and costumes. In the coming months we’ll open it up so that all RR+ members can sell those things and more.
How Do Keys Work?
You add a new Key from the Keys menu in Room Settings. You give the Key a name, description, and cost. Then you configure an item or costume in your room to be locked by the key. Finally, when a player goes to pick up that item or equip that costume they’re asked to pay the cost.
Then a week or so later, sellers receive 70% of the tokens spent on keys in their room divided between all the room’s co-owners.
We’re intentionally keeping our selling group small for the beta as we test out the system and find the flaws. These people were selected based on their creation skills, their history of giving quality feedback, and their good moderation standing. None of their rooms will be “pay to win” or “pay to play”.
What’s the status of Premium Inventions?
There are dozens of great premium inventions in the store now - from costumes to weapon skins to furniture sets to circuit systems to build your own wave battle game!
Our next step here is to let y’all try inventions before you buy them. Here's our plan for how it would work:
You tap a “Try” button on the Invention details page to spawn the invention.
The trial invention spawns in the room and can be manipulated as its permissions allow, but it can't be saved into the room or another invention.
It disappears from the room after 10 minutes, and then can’t be tried again for a while.
We think that’s the best way to give buyers confidence in their purchase, and let sellers show off their creations. We’d love to hear your thoughts on it though.
What’s Next?
Next up we’re going to get keys and premium inventions polished up and ready to come out of beta so that all RR+ members can sell them. Then we’ll move on to more ways of getting creators rewarded for their hard work - specifically in-room currency and cashing out.
In-room currency is just in the idea stage, so take all this with a pile of salt, but the thought is you’ll be able to more easily set up unique currencies in your rooms that you could sell it for tokens (or have players earn it through play). Then people would exchange that in-room currency for whatever you want in the context of your room. I’m excited about the depth of play this will add to rooms.
But wait there’s more - you’ll be able to take all the tokens you earned from selling inventions, keys, and currency and cash them out into real money! This is the big thing we’re wanting to accomplish this year - get creators paid!
